Ever wonder what people are saying about your band or who’s listening to your music (um, of course you do!)?  Promoters do too, and will often search for bands online to check out their buzz.  Well, we just made it a little easier for artists and promoters to track buzz all in one place – on Sonicbids – by integrating Last.fm listens and GoogleBlog and Twitter search results into artist and promoter accounts.

Here’s how it works for artists:

When you log into your Sonicbids account, you’ll see a new area called “DASHBOARD FEED” in the upper right-hand corner. This will give you an at-a-glance view of your EPK Stats along with the top search results from Google Blog Search and Twitter based on your band name.  Clicking “View More” will give you a comprehensive view of your Dashboard, including all of your EPK Stats and Last.fm stats, as well as the top 3 results for your band name on Google Blog Search and Twitter.

dashboardfeedsartistplugins

And for promoters:
You’ll now be able able to see the Google and Twitter buzz and Last.fm listens for bands that submit to your gigs in a new section of the EPK Viewer called PLUGINS.
promoterplugins
And this is just the start. We want to make sure we’re getting you the info you’re looking for where you need it, so post a comment here or drop me a note on Twitter at http://twitter.com/SonicbidsLou to let me know what you think of these plugins and what other sites you’d like to see plugged into Sonicbids.

UPDATE: We’ve made improvments to the plugins based on your feedback! Read more here.

Sonicbids Staff Hey Darrell, thanks for the feedback! I’ll have our QA team look into the calendar overlap issue. The Twitter and GoogleBlogSearch results will vary depending on how well those search engines understand your band name (looks like Google has a hard time understanding the difference between your name “Darrell House” and someone who’s going to “Darrell’s house”).

Lou wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 8:04 am

On my stats page, the daily calendar overlaps the new Dashboard information and I can’t access individual dates to check numbers. Also the Twitter note is not me and 2 of the 3 Google notes are not me. No real value there. What I would really like to see is a counter that shows how many individuals visit my EPK. If one visitor visits all pages and listens to 7 songs, that’s not as important as knowing that 10 individuals visited. It gives me a better idea of how my marketing, including use of my EPK is working.

The Google and Twitter tools are great! Only problem, they are researching/reporting the “DEAD” Alex Harvey. No connection with me. Any idea as to how to not have this keep happening? I am an American singer/songwriter with the hits “Delta Dawn”, “Reuben James”, “Hell and High Water” and many more.

Let me know if you can assist with this issue.

Sincerely,
Alive and Kickin’ Alex Harvey

Yes, great new features. One suggestion, since many of us have common names and nouns for band names, it may help to add the word “music” to your twitter and google search. This would narrow it down for a great many artists whose names are not as well known yet.

Laura Marie wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I’m afraid this is going to hurt us more than help us due to the age of articles showing up, 2007. Maybe we should be using The Blue Suede Crew instead of Scott Wattles and the Blue Suede Crew.

Ruth Furry wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Yes, the other commenters have hit on it. Simply using the artist name as a search query is inadequate. (In my case, there is a guy with the same name as me who writes a popular NFL blog, so of course, he comes up). I think it would be optimal to let each sonicbids member specify a couple of additional keywords that get passed to the search queries.

Mike Florio wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Sonicbids Staff Hey Mike, I think letting artists refine their search terms is a great suggestion. I’ll look into a way to do that.

Lou wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

This a great idea. I hope it helps with exposure. However, like the other comments above the searches that come up especially for lastfm are not me. Letting the artists define their own search terms is definitely the best route I would think. I hope it works out.

thanks

James

Sonicbids Staff Last.fm puts all bands with the same name on the same page. You can get more info in their FAQ.

The Last.fm page for Tulsa is a good example of how to handle multiple bands with the same name.

Last.fm uses a wiki model for band bios and info, so if your band isn’t represented on your page you can simply create a Last.fm account and update it.

Lou wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

I know I’m only using a public computer but it takes a long time – a longer time than before – to access the “my submissions” box. Meanwhile, the google thing is, at least to me, pointless, as it’s coming up with things about people with the same name who are not me and who I don’t care at all about. Sometimes just making the simple things work really, really good is better than having a whole bunch of things that only kinda work.

donnie macdougall wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

I think these are GREAT ideas, I do how ever have a suggestion, I think we should have a side bar of words that could be associated with band name, that way alot of musicians (especially in the hip-hop genre) are named after something, and it so happens that those will pop up. so if you google search CasOne, Sheryll Casone from fox news pops up, But if you search CasOne Liberation then you get tons of blogs and press. Same with twitter. just a suggestion.

CasOne wrote on March 12th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Hi. I think it’s a great idea but the Twitter and Google notes are not me either. Yes, allowing artists to refine their search engines and/or allowing artists to provide their exact Twitter/Google names would help. I agree a Facebook feed would also be useful. Thanks a lot. Love the idea of tracking your band on the various web/social networks. One problem though, for bands who have a name that is can be known for something else, the “tracking” becomes useless. Our name Pravda is also the Russian newspaper name and the Russian word for truth. I’m sure there are other bands with the same problem. Any way to add an additional search parameter to a band’s name to filter out the other stuff?

Not only are the Google notes NOT about the band, the Twitter notes ARE NOT ABOUT THE BAND, and I we have a Twitter account under a different name! The Twitter account that comes up is for XIOMY and we are under XIOMYMUSIC. We had to make it that way because XIOMY was already taken. Also, we are a Christian band, and the Twitter feed coming up (which is not ours) contains swearing and we definately do NOT appreciate that at all!

Xiomy wrote on March 13th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I think I’m having a similar issue. I’ve noticed that a page has been created on last.fm and possibly twitter as well, however I have no clue how to log in and update these pages. Would appreciate any info you would have or any place where I can research these partnerships.

James wrote on March 13th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Sonicbids Staff Hey James, You can get more info about Last.fm on their FAQ here. The Twitter Buzz plugin is searching for people who are mentioning your band on Twitter. Back in July I wrote a blog post for the Sonicbids Lounge that gives a quick overview of what Twitter is and how bands can use it.

Lou wrote on March 14th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Hi – the google and twitter excerpts don’t add value for me as is. Although my name is not real common, it is shared with a councilor and columnist in Canada so those will trump me most times. I echo the suggestion to qualify the search with “music”. The idea is geat – hope you can refine it.

Terry wrote on March 14th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

The search string is not right for our band and will therefore mislead folks looking at our EPK.

Hi!-
The Donna Bauer who is listed under the Google section is not me-it seems like this is a problem…
Thanks!

Donna Bauer wrote on March 15th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

This is actually quite terrible. None of the mentions on any of these sites have anything to do with our band. If anything it is a huge distraction.

Kate wrote on March 15th, 2009 at 11:42 pm

Lots of the google and twitter updates have nothing to do with our band name (Darlings of Chelsea) which happens to share the name with a furniture store in the UK. You’ll need to improve the search to get my approval of the feature. We should also be able to filter things that show up by removing them or adding new ones.

I also think that only using last.fm is biased, why them?

Robby wrote on March 16th, 2009 at 12:20 am

Fantastic, this site just keeps getting better & better!

jade ambroze wrote on March 16th, 2009 at 10:51 am

Good idea in theory, however, non of the info posted on my dashboard is for my band. The stats belong to other bands with the same name. A better filter needs to be in place.

t.j. edelkoort wrote on March 16th, 2009 at 11:45 am

Maybe I’m misunderstanding this but when I look at my band’s EPK, I don’t see any of this info or any new section that contains it. Surely this should be on the normal EPK web page? It’s a great feature but unless it’s on the EPK for everyone to see, I’m not sure how much use it is.

Pete wrote on March 16th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Unfortunately, there are two relatively well-known individuals in health care with the same name as me, so a report about cancer in children is showing up on the twitter feed under my name. Any way to weed these out? The other Faith Gibson is a famed midwife.

Faith Gibson wrote on March 16th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

maybe i’m just being picky here but my last comments on this idea were not exactly positive. i think i said something about articles appearing with the same name that are not about me (how could they be? it’s not even my real name, for god’s sakes.) now you’ve attributed a completely different set of comments to me, or at least that’s what i’m seeing when i look at my epk stats screen. being misrepresented and misquoted in the same four inch column is a bit much.

donnie macdougall wrote on March 16th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Folks,
Most bands are using Myspace these days and those views/plays are very informative. I am not sure how many are as active on last.fm as they are on Myspace.

Also, I am curious as to why you are using Google Blog search and not the Google Web search. You are missing all the press articles that come out on bands when you only use Google Blog.

Something i’d like to see that I think would make Sonicbids even better than it is, is a form for building a kit that is more geared toward members of the press. These EPKs are designed to get gigs which is absolutely wonderful but I doubt the editor at a magazine my publicist is pitching cares about my stage plot or my PDF rider. If there was a version that did away with the venue booker features and allowed for more press centric information like a pitch area “why XYZ artist belongs in your mag” that can be edited for EACH member of the press you send out to. I’d definitely pay an extra $5-$10 a month for that flexibility.

I think this idea is great!!! It gives the promoters a chance to see if there is any “buzz” online with your band/group. It does work for some of us. We have gotten gigs since this feature has been put up. Alot of promoters and labels count on the “buzz” on artists before a “selected” or “not slected” is given. To me, it’s an important tool.

There are several artist’s who have the same name or a similar variation of it. Artist’s are getting credit for top songs when that isn’t the person who made the song. That might be great for them, but MY songs have the most hits and I don’t get credit for it!!!

The Google/Twitter stuff is not useful to me. It wastes space and adds confusion to an already cluttered User page interface:
a. It’s never shown anything that’s relevant to me
b. There are better ways to keep up with Twitter, etc

I’m very happy that that the filter feature has been added for gig notifications. My one feature request for it, though, is to add “Songwriter” as a category. I’m not a Singer. I write Songs. I don’t need to hear from people looking for singers.

As far as “features” in general, I would much rather have Sonicbids spend it’s time on fundamentals like:

- Two-state “Save Changes” buttons
- A “My Account” button on EVERY screen.
- When I play one of my audio tracks from within Sonicbids, it shouldn’t register as a “song play”
- When I want to replace a song in my audio tracks with a new mix (of the same song), why do I have to call tech support and rename the new version with an asterisk, etc? And then have to look at the separate versions in my stats? I should be given 3 options, “Delete a song”, “replace a song”, or “Add a song”. “Replace a song” should keep the stats from the previous version.
- When using quotation marks within the body of text when writing a testimonial or a review of a song contest, and then “editing” what you’ve written before you submit (review page), It turns the Quotation marks into wiki format (or something) and each quotation mark now becomes eight characters which fills up the alloted characters and eliminates the characters off the end of your testimonial. So you have to erase and rewrite a whole bunch of stuff.

I love the Twitter. I don’t use Last FM too much so my stats just sit there most of the time. I wish it could be just “Google” instead of “Google Blogs”. Inky Glass will get upwards of 500 actual Google hits; and not all of them are blogs. Plus it widens the field. Just a thought…..
